Brook Farm Veterinary Center, as a full service small animal hospital, provides complete veterinary care – including Canine and Feline boarding, surgical care, and hospitalization.

History
Dr. Evan Kanouse founded the hospital with his partner at the time, Dr. Allen Schoen, in 1982. The hospital expanded over the years, and with the purchase of Pawling Animal Hospital, the staff grew to four doctors and twenty support members. Some time after Dr. Schoen and Dr. Kanouse were certified in  Veterinary acupuncture, Dr. Schoen left to begin an  Acupuncture / Holistic practice, and has since co-authored several scientific texts and wrote an authorative book on Veterinary Acupuncture. (Evan and Allen remain good friends and consult with each other often.)

Eventually, the Pawling practice was sold and, for the last fifteen-or-so years, Dr. Kanouse has been the sole veterinarian responsible for patient care. With his wife, Pat, as Business Manager, and son, Evan, Director of Hospital Administration,  along with a staff of about 20 devoted employees, Brook Farm has remained a place where we continually strive to deserve your trust. We love animals and we love being part of the community in which we serve (check out our Community Involvement!)

Services
We provide medical and surgical care, as well as complete boarding services, to our specialty: dogs and cats. Just about any medical problem can be treated at the hospital, including skin conditions, heart disease, orthopedic issues, infectious diseases, and so on. We hospitalize pets as needed, where radiography, blood work, and special diagnostic studies can all be done on site. Obviously, there are times when more specialized care is warranted, at which point we invite a board of certified surgeons, ultrasound specialists, etc. If we need to refer you and your pet to a neurologist for an MRI or CT scan, or any kind of specialty center, we never hesitate to do so.

We’ll run through a few special points…

  • We routinely provide spay and neutering (including low-cost options) services, but also knee surgery, tumor removal, spleenectomy (removing the spleen), enterotomy (intestinal surgery), etc. If spinal, brain, or heart surgery is needed, we refer you to those more experienced.
  • We do see other pets as well, such as rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, and even reptiles. Although we are comfortable with the treatment of these animals, it’s not uncommon for us to refer you to an “exotic specialist”, especially for birds and reptiles, since we have some excellent individuals in the area that care for only that type of pet.
  • Holistically speaking, we have a healthy respect for Alternative Medicine, from Chiropractic to Chinese Herbs to Acupuncture. If we can’t help you at our practice or answer your questions, we’ll find someone who can.
  • Finally, we try to be available to our clients as much as possible. We’re open twelve hours a day during the week, and until early afternoon on Saturday. On Sunday, we provide medical care behind the scenes, but don’t see appointments unless specially arranged. After hours, our answering service will generally be able to reach the doctor for you until midnight. Just call the regular number: 845-878-4833, and dial 900 at the prompt for emergency assistance.  In the event that the doctor is not available, we can refer you to the closest emergency clinic and give you directions as needed.

While we stay true to what we based the practice on back in 1982, we’ve continued to change with the times in order to keep current with the many advancements in veterinary medicine. In times like these, we know our boundaries and aim to provide quality, convenient, and courteous service at a convenient price.
