Sometimes it can be tough to keep an active chewer satisfied. Do you have a pet who destroys their toys? It’s important to have some ideas about how to find the types of toys that will help keep them occupied and that will stand the test of time.
Are Some Dog Toys Actually Indestructible?
Many dog toys claim to be indestructible. We are here to tell you that probably isn’t true. Please take the “indestructible” claims with a grain of salt and only purchase dog toys based on recommendations from those who have tried them.
Safety is #1
It’s important to take safety into consideration when finding your pet the best toy.
You don’t want your pet to accidentally ingest any broken pieces of a toy because it could cause internal harm to them. Be sure the material of the toy will remain in one piece as much as possible while your destructive dog goes to town chewing on it. When giving your pet a toy, even one that is super “tough” it is important to observe them closely to make sure they don’t accidentally hurt themselves with it.
Toy Material
We always recommend getting your pet toys that are made of non-toxic materials. The toy will likely spend the majority of its time in your pet’s mouth so non-toxic materials are really a necessity. As we discussed before it’s basically impossible for companies to create an “indestructible” toy, but if you find one your pet enjoys, be sure any pieces that could break off and potentially get ingested are made of non-toxic materials.
Proper Size
Another part of selecting the right toy for your destructive chewer includes making sure you choose the right sized toy for your pet. Izzy the great dane and Topher the shih-tzu would not benefit from having the same sized toys. If the toy you choose is too small then it’ll be easier for your pet to destroy it. Another concern is that your pet could accidentally swallow the toy whole if it’s too small for their mouth. Most toys will have sizing suggestions based on your pet’s weight, but we’re here to remind you to take into consideration the size of your pet’s mouth whenever shopping for a new toy as sizing charts may vary.
Stay Close By
Truthfully, it’s going to be near impossible to find a completely indestructible toy for your pet that has only positive reviews. The reason for this is that every dog is a little bit different. Whenever giving your pet a new toy, we recommend staying close by to watch their behavior. By supervising them you’re allowing yourself the opportunity to intervene if needed. If you notice your dog is chewing right through something that was advertised as “indestructible” be sure to remove it so it doesn’t become a danger to them. Dangers include breaking their teeth, choking and cutting the inside of their mouth.
